Martin Luther King Junior asserted, "I have a dream that one day ... little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers."
February 12 - 14, 2010 the spirit of these words will be alive in Hockey
in the Hood VI. While hockey players don't necessarily
"join hands" there will be plenty of hard checks and high-fives at
Hockey in the Hood VI
in Detroit, MI.
The
Detroit Hockey
Association will host HITH 6 at Jack Adams Arena. Select
games will also be played outside at Clark Park (1130
Clark Street, Detroit, MI - (313) 297-9328). See
the
Detroit Hockey Association Calendar for a full schedule of
games. Willie O'Ree will kick off the festivities by dropping
the ceremonial first puck during the opening ceremonies at 2:00 PM on
Saturday, 2/13/2010. Bring out the family and enjoy some good hockey. All games
are free!
The annual Hockey in the Hood tournament breaks down stereotypes and
brings diverse inner-city hockey teams together for a tournament that is
capped off by the presentation of the Willie O’Ree championship trophy,
the Willie O’Cup. In 2008 HITH IVcelebrated Willie O'Ree's
50th anniversary! O'Ree broke the color barrier as the first black player in
the NHL back in 1958.

Hockey in the Hood VI (Feb. 12 - 14,
2010) will be the most diverse
inner-city amateur hockey tournament yet. This year teams from
Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, MI; Buffalo, NY; Wasilla, AK, and metro
Detroit will
participate. Our guest of honor, Willie O'Ree will travel from his home
in San Diego, CA.
